With effect from 2023, tent pitching will not be in the NPCC syllabus, but will instead be replaced by the Blue Tent. All logistics that are irrelevant to the new syllabus will not be used.
Standard tent pitching procedure
- Erect the tent frame by inserting the pins of the vertical poles into the holes at the two ends of the horizontal pole. Ensure that the tent frame is perpendicular to the ground.
- Slip the inner sheet over the tent frame.
- Secure the guylines to the inner sheet using 1.5 metre twine and the bowline.
- Pull the corner of the inner sheet such that the wall flap is perpendicular to and just touching to the ground. Align the inner corner pegs using the L-shape method. Align the outer corner pegs one peg's distance away from the inner corner pegs. For more about peg distance and alignment, refer to this.
- After checking that the alignment, direction and distance of pegs are correct, hammer the pegs in at 45 degrees to the ground till a depth of one palm away from the ground.
- Anchor the other end of the guylines to the pegs using the tent guy loop.
- Tighten the corner guylines of the inner sheet by fastening pairs of diagonally opposite corner guylines simultaneously so that tension is spread out.
- After the four corner guylines have been secured, hammer in the wall guyline pegs and tie the two wall guylines.
- Ensure that the surface of the inner sheet is tight and the wall flaps are vertically upright and just touching the gorund
- Tie the main guylines using 2.5 metres long twine to the pins of the vertical poles with clove hitches.
- Peg the main guyline pegs. The distance of the main guyline peg from the base of the vertical pole should be equivalent to the length of the vertical pole.
- Anchor the two main guylines using tent guy loops.
- Drape the outer sheet over the inner sheet. Secure the corner guylines and wall guylines similarly.
- Unfold the ground sheet inside the tend and lay it flat, folding the sides if necessary.
- Adjust the tension of the guylines if necessary and ensure that the tent has a 6-inch ventilation gap.
